My parents tell me that it was obvious from an early age that I loved music. I would sing and play guitar all over our house. I started voice lessons around the age of seven and guitar lessons around age ten.
The first time I performed on a stage was at the Boulder Creek Festival in 2014. I performed as part of a band program that is available through the Rock & Pop Music Academy of Boulder. The feeling of getting on stage and performing in front of so many people was amazing. That was the moment I knew it was something I wanted to do more often. I've been chasing that feeling ever since.
There's nothing I love more than performing for a live audience. I hope to do it for the rest of my life. It's an ambitious goal to want to do this professionally.
I'm ready to do the work! I know I have to pay my dues, anything you want is worth working for. There will be days I end up playing for a small crowd when I was hoping for a large crowd. There will be other days where it all comes together. It's a process. As long as I am constantly learning and growing, there will be progress.
I'm proud of the originals I've written and the songs that Ian and I have co-written. I'm also proud to have played the Arise Music Festival in 2019, it was a huge honor. I am always thrilled when other musicians invite me to sing and play with them. Ian and I have both jammed with Al Laughlin (The Samples) and Hazel Miller. There's so much talent in Colorado, I'm fortunate to play all around the Boulder/Denver metro area and the Front Range.
Creativity is not something you can turn on and off. Sometimes I do my best work late at night. It makes my mom crazy. Besides making music, I love to skateboard in my free time. Even though I'm just a beginner I can't get enough of it.
It's difficult to pick a favorite artist or influence. I love classics like Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Nina Simone and Etta James, but I also like contemporary artists and genres. I take inspiration from hip-hop, spoken word, funk, jazz and even punk and metal. Lately I've been listening to Amy Winehouse, Stevie Nicks, Stevie Wonder , SZA and Taylor Swift.
I am just starting out, both in life and as a musician. I don't know where my path will lead but I am excited to see where my music takes me. If I don't end up as a musician I'd like to pursue something in the field of medicine, maybe I could become a doctor. Who knows, it's a lot to think about at 15.
I feel very fortunate to have so much support from friends and family.
Thank you to the band, My Favorite Scarecrow. We made great strides in our time together. I wish you all success as you graduate high school and head off into the world.
Thank you Ian. We continue to push each other as we become better musicians. We really solidified things this past summer and we did a lot despite the pandemic. I'm looking forward to some exciting years ahead.
Thank you to my parents, grandparents and my extended family and friends for all of your support.
Thank you to my teachers at https://thelessonstudio.com/ The Lesson Studio in Boulder. Your teaching is a gift, without you I would not be learning about the music that I love.
